Marlborough’s Rio Olympic favorites

On August 16, 2016, we sent out a survey to all Marlborough students and faculty on personal viewing habits during the Rio Summer Olympics. We received a total of 243 responses. Here are the results of the survey.Untitled_infographic (1)

Among the 235 responders to this question, nobody travelled to Rio to watch the Olympics. 8 responders, however, answered that they had family members who travelled to Rio.

Of the 234 responders who answered this question, a total of 184 students and faculty answered that they watched the Olympics for about 1-3 hours on average every day, making up 78.6 percent of the responders. 13.7 percent of responders, or 32 people, answered that they spent 0 hours a day watching the Olympics. 6 percent, 14 people, answered that they spent between 4 and 5 hours a day watching the Olympics, and 1.7 percent, 4 people, answered that they spent between 6 and 12 hours a day watching the Olympics.

Of the 222 responses to this question, 82.4 percent, 182 people, answered that they watched more women’s competitions than men’s. 17.6 percent, 39 people, answered that they watched more men’s competitions than women’s.

The most common Olympic sports that the 231 responders to this question watched were Gymnastics, Swimming, Track and Field, Diving, Beach Volleyball, Indoor Volleyball, Rowing, Water Polo, Fencing, Table Tennis, Rugby, Golf, Weightlifting, Wrestling/Martial Arts and Handball. Gymnastics had the most watchers, with 217 responders answering that they watched the sport.

The athletes that the 231 responders to this question most enjoyed watching were Simone Biles (Gymnastics, USA), Michael Phelps (Swimming, USA), Katie Ledecky (Swimming, USA), Usain Bolt (Track and Field, Jamaica), Kerry Walsh Jennings and April Ross (Beach Volleyball, USA), Simone Manuel (Swimming, USA), Justin Gatlin (Track and Field, USA), Michelle Carter (Shotput, USA), Fu Yuanhui (Swimming, China), Aly Raisman (Gymnastics, USA), Nathan Adrian (Swimming, USA), and Carli Lloyd (Soccer, USA). The most popular athlete was Simone Biles, with 197 responders answering that they most enjoyed watching her compete.
