Humanities Exchange

On Mar. 9, nearly 50 students filed into the Collins Room, opting to miss their F, G, and I period classes to participate in the second annual Humanities Exchange. Sue ’12, Kitty ’12 and Nicole ’12 worked with science instructor Arleen Forsheit, foreign languages instructor Eric Reinholtz and Associate Director of Academic Technology Victor Ortiz to plan this event since January.

The Exchange consisted of four 50-minute lectures, given by Dr. Anthony Hassan, a former Air Force general who specializes in helping soldiers with mental health issues; Tom Schulman, a screenwriter who wrote Dead Poets Society and Honey I Shrunk the Kids; Robert Cooper, an education reformer who works in the Urban Schooling division at UCLA’s Graduate School of Education and Jennifer Jung-Kim, a professor at UCLA’s Center for Buddhist Studies.

Payne, Gomez pregnant

Community Outreach Coordinator Miranda Payne and Librarian and 7th Grade Level Dean Nichole Gomez are pregnant, Payne with her second child and Gomez with her first.

Payne said she is looking forward to going on maternity leave for the first semester of the 2012-2013 school year, since she wasn’t able to take time off from graduate school when she was pregnant with her seven-year-old son, Henry. Payne is approximately five months along and said she is excited to have another boy.

Although Payne has been pregnant before, she said she’s still startled by how bizarre it feels.

“Any time your body changes rapidly it’s shocking,” Payne said.

On the other hand, Gomez is three months pregnant, barely out of her first trimester, and does not know the gender of the baby yet. Gomez said she feels relatively good, physically, and is very nervous and happy.
