For many coffee and tea fanatics, Starbucks is the go-to place for a caffeine fix, a snack, and free wi-fi. Since its foundation in 1971, Starbucks has become one of the world’s leading coffee shops. Here are the top-10 most interesting facts about the chain:

1. In 2010, Starbucks hired an astounding 137,000 employees, or what they refer to as “partners.” Starbucks’ partners make up approximately twice the population of Greenland.

2. Because of its enormous number of employees, Starbucks spends $300 million on insurance and health care for its partners each year, more than its annual expenses for coffee beans.

2. There are over 87,000 possible drink combinations to choose from at Starbucks…venti, sugar-free, soy vanilla latte, anyone?

3. With over four times the amount of caffeine in a can of Red Bull, one grande Starbucks coffee contains a whopping 320 milligrams of the substance.

4. Starbucks uses 93 gallons of milk (whole, 2-percent, nonfat, soy…you name it) per year—enough milk to fill 155 standard Olympic-sized swimming pools.

5. Starbucks goes through an average of 2.3 billion paper cups in a single year. Although the company offers reusable mugs, most customers opt for its signature paper cups (even though Starbucks offer discounts if you bring in a mug!).

6. The U.S. city farthest from a Starbucks is Adak, Alaska. If you visited, you would have to drive 1,044 miles for that coveted Starbucks latte.

7. The lesser-known trenta cup, one size larger than the venti, holds slightly more than your stomach is able to hold, with its capacity at 916 mL. The stomach’s maximum capacity is 900 mL.

8. The founders of Starbucks almost named the chain Pequod, after the ship in Moby Dick, but instead went with the story’s character named Starbucks.

9. Starbucks serves an average of 40 million customers per week. This is almost nine times the population of Los Angeles!

10. Since 1987, Starbucks has steadily added an average of two stores each day, expanding its empire at an extraordinary rate.
