The M expands online

The M newspaper has finally gone online. The UltraViolet has been online since the beginning of the 2009-2010 school year, and now The M makes its way onto the Internet, with both articles from the paper’s print edition and an online-only blog.

The M blog, updated three times a week for three weeks in a month, will include different news stories, or posts, from the ones seen in the newspaper.

“We will be posting ordinary news, as well as reviews, interviews, humor and other less traditional pieces. The wide variety of articles will appeal to people and help give The M more readers,” said Clara  ’14, the Online Editor of The M. “The online site has original content to help differentiate it from the print edition. That includes videos and links to other online material.”

Posts already on the site include a review of a popular YouTube video (“High School Sucks: The Musical”), a delicious recipe for baked apples, and an editorial about the pressures of the college application process.

Ileana ’11, the Online Editor-in-Chief for The UltraViolet, said that The M and UV had gone online for several different reasons.

“We knew the UV staff was going to be smaller than previous years, so instead of overloading new members with trying to publish a 16-page paper, we opted to cut down to 12 pages, combine The M with the UV, and focus on expanding online. Having the UV and M online also helps strengthen the community’s voice in a new medium,” Ileana said in an e-mail.

Hopefully, the blog will attract more readers to both the online and print versions of the paper. When asked if she had ever read The M, Catherine ’16 replied, no.

This is where The M’s online edition comes in. “[The blog] will help The M get more readers because most people don’t read the print edition,” Pilar ’15 said. “However, I think it will take some time for the blogs to catch on.”

I love this blog and completely agree with everything it has said. The fact that the M and UV are online this year does “strengthen the communities voice in a new medium.” I am so excited to explore the online M and UV more indepth.
