Spirit Week 2019 is coming…here’s how to prepare

Spirit week is a notoriously exciting time of the year when the whole school participates in dances, costume contests and themed days. 2019 is no exception, with the hype beginning to build weeks in advance. Since the long MLK weekend cuts into spirit week, making it four days rather than the usual five, this year’s themes are extra special.

The week begins with meme/vine day on Tuesday. Memes and vines can be appreciated by anyone from 7th-12th grade, making it the perfect theme to kick off 2019 (…even though Vine died in 2016). From viral instagram memes like the egg that got more likes than Kylie Jenner’s most popular photo, or DW and Arthur or “I could’ve dropped my croissant!”, meme and vine day is both affordable and easy – leaning into Gen Z’s somewhat lazy attitude and strange sense of humor. On Tuesday, students are supposed to bring in toothbrushes, toothpaste and mouthwash for Dignity and Power Now (sponsored by AACE).

Pop Culture is a classic but still fabulous theme for Wednesday. This means you can wear anything that isn’t meme/vine material. Whether you want to go as Cher from “Clueless,” Paris Hilton/Kim Kardashian or Blair and Serena, just make sure you look “fetch!” as Gretchen from “Mean Girls” would put it. Keeping up with the posh theme, bring in cosmetics such as mascara, eyeshadow, blush, lipstick and razors for the Trans-Latina Coalition (sponsored by OLE and Alliance). Please make sure that none of these products have been used or opened before because…ew! Only donate products that you would want to receive.

#TBT is one of the most popular Twitter, Instagram and Tumblr hashtags, as well as the theme for Thursday. Students can choose to wear whatever gives them throwback feels and nostalgia. Some examples could be Hannah Montana, Boo from “Monsters Inc.,” or Lilo from “Lilo and Stitch.” Even the 7th graders who have only been alive for, like, three years can get nostalgic for the oh-so-simple times of middle and elementary school. On Thursday, be sure to bring baby wipes for Alexandria House (sponsored by Community Partnerships Council).

Last but not least, Friday’s theme is….bland colored t-shirts. So anticlimactic. Despite the drab dress code, Friday is anything but boring. On Friday every grade performs a dance that they practice throughout the week, with crazy additions such as acrobatics, morphe suits and streamers. Ending spirit week with a bang, Friday’s ASM in the auditorium consists of crazy screaming and very high spirits, bringing the whole school as well as teachers and administrators together. On Friday, bring deodorant and feminine hygiene products for Coalition to End Slavery and Trafficking (CAST) and Saving Innocence (sponsored by Adeline ’21 and Rami ’19).
