Marlborough will be gaining two new college counselors in the 2017-2018 school year.  Director of College Counseling at Brentwood School Jawaan Wallace will join the Marlborough college counseling team;  in addition, the School announced Brian Smith as the other counselor on Friday, Feb. 24. 

Wallace said that she is excited to join the Marlborough Community especially because of the all-girls environment.

“I love the confidence Marlborough instills in its students, and I cannot wait to contribute to that environment,” said Wallace.

Assistant Head of School and Head of Upper School Laura Hotchkiss ’86 said she believes that Wallace is a positive addition to the team.

“Our search committee interviewed candidates in January and identified Dr. Jawaan Wallace as a great fit for Marlborough,” Hotchkiss said.

Wallace has extensive experience in the field of college counseling that she will bring to the Marlborough team. Prior to working at Brentwood School for six years, Wallace began her career working in admissions at Johns Hopkins University. She then worked as a college counselor at Galloway School in Atlanta, Georgia.

Wallace said she has focused her career on the college process.

“I’ve always been intrigued by colleges and universities, so the opportunity to share that interest with young people and get them excited about the next phase of their lives brings me so much joy,” Wallace said.

In addition to her wide experience, Wallace said she understands the need to get to know each student outside of the counseling room.  She said she is excited to take part in all types of activities around the School and hopes to make an impact on the larger Marlborough community.

“I hope to support my students in the many activities they are involved with,” Wallace said.  She explained that a key part of her role at Marlborough will be observing students in all aspects of their lives, curricular and extracurricular.

Furthermore, Wallace said that she has specific goals for her students within the college counseling office.

“I know that applying to college can sometimes be a daunting process, but I hope I can bring a sense of calmness to the process and can get the girls excited as they think about what their futures hold,” Wallace said
