New shoes to fill

Sylvia '19

Newly elected 10th Grade Class President Sylvia ’19 looks forward to making a difference.

“I ran for president because I have found that being on Council is a great way to serve my classmates and the larger Marlborough community. As class president, I get to play a role in shaping my grade’s first Upper School experience,” she said.

Sylvia said she hopes to build class spirit and strengthen the class bond, especially through meaningful community service projects.

In looking back on the election, she said she was grateful to her classmates.

“Giving my speech was pretty nerve-wracking at first, but fun because I could feel my classmates supporting me,” Sylvia said.

Kendall ’18, the incoming 11th Grade Class President, said she wants to focus on making class meetings more fun. Kendall plans to play music before class meeting starts and to allow more time for the  games, class trivia and fun guessing competitions that the class enjoyed this year. To create more time for meetings. Kendall said she will try to put more information in weekly emails for students to read on their own time.  Kendall is sensitive to the issue that class meetings should be fun because she said that she  has sat in on class meetings for four years now and hears people complain.

“This is a time we get to hang out as a  class. These are our last two years at Marlborough, and I hope that the class enjoys all the time we spend together,” she said.  “I think the next year is the perfect time, since the field will be done. Everyone can finally attend and support more teams during their home games. Increasing our school and class spirit will bring us closer as a class.”

Kendall also hopes to increase the class of 2018’s School spirit by creating a spirit point contest.

12th Grade Class President  Alden ’17 said he wants to initiate a prize for “Senior of the Month.” He also looks forward to a coordination of coffee orders, a speaker for the lounge with a class playlist and a killer prom.

“I am excited to help the parents design the senior lounge,” Alden said.

Alden said he wanted to run for 12th Grade President because he likes his class and wants everyone to have the best year possible. He loves the abundance of council lunch meetings.

He said he would like to work with the administration to bring more attention to the gender/sexuality diversity on campus and discuss it more openly, both through Council and Alliance, as he hopes the Transgender Task Force will have written a policy for trans applicants and students.

In considering what the legacy of his class will be, he hopes the School will remember his class as a “kind and considerate senior class.”
