Marlborough’s Chamber Choir performed at Carnegie Hall in New York City on Feb. 13. It was one of three acts that had the opportunity to sing at the esteemed concert venue every three years. Chamber choir consists of twenty-eight girls, all sophomores, juniors, and seniors, and twenty-six made the trip to New York. Music instructor and Chamber Choir director, Ernie Scarbrough organized the first trip six years ago.

The girls said before the trip that they were excited by the chance to perform in front of a large audience in one of the most prestigious music halls.

“I think that it’s a really cool opportunity that not a lot of people get to do,” Abby ’18 said.

The choir performed Magnificat by John Rutter, a British conductor and composer, with another two hundred voice choir. Their conductor, David R. Thye, chose the music, and they had been practicing for the 40 minute performance since Winter Break.

“The practices were long and it was a challenge to sing for forty minutes, but it was a good experience,” Talia ’16 said.

After they arrived in New York, Chamber Choir had two days of three-hour rehearsals before the big night. About five hundred to a thousand people attended the concert, more than twice the amount of people that come to any given performance at Marlborough.

The trip wasn’t all work. The girls got the chance to attend a Les Miserables show on Broadway and had a lot of free time to walk around the city to explore. After their performance, they got onto the boat Everton, which had a dance floor. They celebrated their performance by dancing past the Statue of Liberty on the Hudson River.
