Seniors at Cottonwood Classical Preparatory School in Albuquerque, New Mexico originally decided to hold a Communist themed Prom — “Prom-munism” — however, they vetoed the decision a few days after the event quickly grabbed the media’s attention. Although a majority of the seniors voted for Prom-munism, some expressed their discontent at the theme. One student said the theme is “inappropriate” while another ambivalently commented, “We have a lot of jokesters in our grade, so they wanted it to be funny, and a lot of them are really intense with politics.” Not only was Cottonwood School the victim of many ironic news headlines, but also some critics sent the School aggressive and threatening emails. In light of the backlash the School garnered, Cottonwood Senior Dylan Yarbrough called “a unique take on a stereotypical, fun time — a rite of passage for all high schoolers.”
