History instructor John Langdon, affectionately known around campus as “Doc,” will leave Marlborough next month after 35 years in the history department. Doc started working at Marlborough in 1978, after receiving his Bachelor of Science at the United States Naval Academy as well as his Masters of Arts and his doctorate at The University of California, Los Angeles.

Over the past 35 years, he has taught Ancient Civilizations Honors, Advanced Placement European History, World Religions, and an elective on the history of the Cold War. Due to changes in the history curriculum, Doc felt it was a good time to leave Marlborough and focus his attention on teaching at UCLA as well as doing some consulting work.

“I consider my students to be thousands of adopted daughters,” Doc said. Doc recalls that when he first started teaching at UCLA and was handed the course catalog, he said he could teach up to 16

courses. The administrators at UCLA didn’t think he was serious, but Doc says that he was able to teach so many courses because Marlborough students “have taught [him] how to teach.”

“I leave with no regrets. Not many people can say they have been in the same job for 35 years. It has been a real pleasure working at Marlborough,” Doc said.
