“During Summer School last year, I worked as a teacher’s aid, and one of my students loved to make fun of my outfits,” Millicent ’12 said. “On one particular day, he looked me up and down and said, ‘I have on a monogrammed ascot; what are you wearing?” 

Kids say the darndest things.

At least that’s what the 32 Marlborough girls who worked at last year’s Summer School have said. After five weeks of working with students ranging from kindergartners to high school seniors, Marlborough girls came away with a list of memorable quotes from many of their most outspoken “little Mustangs.”

As we move from the school year into the Summer School session, which will run from Jun. 25 to Jul. 27 and host more than 600 students, the 48 Marlborough girls who will serve as counselors and teaching assistants are looking forward to a summer spent in an alternate version of these ever-graceful halls of learning, one filled with dressmaking and video game designing instead of geometry and US History.

Math instructor and Assistant Director of Summer School Jennifer Uribe said she enjoys watching the Marlborough counselors interact with the students. “You get to see [students] in a completely different way with the little kids. They are just so loving and caring,” she said. “There’s a lot of excitement and happiness.”

Uriel ’14 will be working at Summer School for the first time this year as an assistant swimming instructor and is anticipating a fun summer job. “I’m really excited to help the kids learn their strokes. I love being in the water, so I want to share my experience with little kids, because I love their enthusiasm.”

Millicent ’12 served as a teaching assistant during Summer School last year, and one day, one of her students got up and situated himself in the corner of the art room by placing a circle of markers around him. He said he was placing himself in “self-isolation.”

“He was always trying to sell things to the other children,” Millicent ’12 said, “except he wasn’t allowed to.”

No stranger to working with young children, Warner Avenue Elementary School Kindergarten Assistant Christine ’06 worked as a co-counselor to a group of five and six year olds last year at Summer School. One of her students, Morgan, stuck Veggie Stix in his hamburger bun and said, “Look! It’s a birthday cake!”

Christine ’06, along with a group of other Marlborough girls, kept a list of their students’ most memorable quotes, including:

“What do flowers eat? Pancakes?”

“I hate tax day. When you own a company, you learn to hate tax day.”

“My lunchbox took a journey down the table, like Indiana Jones!”

“If I see money on the floor, I’ll pick it up. I feel like a robber.”

“The square root of ‘soon,’ is ‘never.’”

“We have had some very unique children [at Summer School,]” Millicent ’12 said. “I never worked with little kids before, so I didn’t realize how much they observe, and how much fun they could be.”
