Bucket o’fun

On a recent Wednesday, girls and teachers ran around Booth Field, outfitted in belts of red or blue flags. Their yells and cheers could be heard throughout the School.

On Nov. 14, All-School Council put two “Buckets o’ Fun” containing Frisbees, volleyballs and footballs on Booth Field for students to enjoy during their free time to encourage stressed-out girls to have fun and play, according to Student Activities Coordinator and English instructor Sarah Wolf.

“The idea of the buckets is that students should forget their school work and have fun on the field, [as they did at] the Hunger Games and Potluck,” Wolf said.Director of Upper School and Assistant Head of School Laura Hotchkiss personally bought the bright pink buckets and gathered the balls from the School’s huge stash in the Gymnasium.

The Athletics Council introduced the idea of a Bucket o’ Fun in Jan. 2009, when Booth Field first opened. The bucket disappeared for a short time while Munger Hall was under construction, because the Modular Village occupied most of Booth Field. After All-School Council advertised and promoted playing with the footballs and Frisbees during lunch this past fall, students began to use the sports equipment as well.

“I think the Bucket is really successful. It’s always nice passing the field and seeing classmates using it during lunch,” Kathleen ’12 said.

Even teachers, such as History instructor Mike Rindge, History instructor Tom Millar, English instructor Brett Quimby and English instructor David Long, have been seen and heard on Booth Field having fun with their students.

“The Bucket o’ Fun is a great idea that allows the girls to use their imagination and make up their own games,” English instructor Chris Thompson said.
