School hungry for Games

Due to the excitement generated by this year’s all-school book, The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins, students and faculty put work aside for the afternoon of Jan. 31 to participate in the School’s very own version of the Hunger Games in order to increase camaraderie and provide an opportunity for fun and relaxation.

Throughout the afternoon, students faced a variety of physical and mental challenges, ranging from tug-of-war and blind ninja tag to world geography and celebrity identification.

“I absolutely loved the staring contest,” Zoe ’13 said. “It was so much fun and was a unique and interesting challenge that I certainly did not expect.”

According to Head of School Barbara Wagner, the idea was initially suggested by the All-School Book Committee.

“In past years, students merely discussed the all-school book in their English or history class. This year, there was this idea to do something different that was more hands-on,” Wagner said.

The Hunger Games required a lot of diligent planning, according to Dean of Faculty Martha Schuur.

“I was on a Hunger Games Committee, which required many hours to organize events for the day,” Schuur said. “I attended countless meetings in preparation for the Games.”

Reflecting back on the day, Mikaela  ’13 said that the Games proved successful in relieving stress.

“I consider the Games as a success because they were even more exciting than I think anyone was anticipating,” she said. “Personally, the Games were able to distract me from all of my homework and the various stresses of school.”
