It’s award time again

Here we are, the middle of January, and the 2011 Oscar nominations have just come out. There are the expected ones as well as the surprises. Ever since the Best Picture category expanded from five movie nominations to ten, I’ve felt that the Academy has lowered its standards somewhat. It’s exceptionally difficult to have ten fantastic movies made in one year, but this year, things are changing. Every nominated film has been positively critiqued, greatly discussed and thoroughly enjoyed. And while I’m personally fine with any of the nominated movies—Black Swan, The Fighter, Inception, The Kids Are All Right, The King’s Speech, 127 Hours, The Social Network, Toy Story, True Grit, Winter’s Bone—and I’ve seen most of them, my vote goes out to you, King’s Speech. You deserve it, Colin.
