Class of 2010 recruits

Two Mustang athletes have committed to colleges.

After playing club for years and varsity volleyball since freshman year, Devin will be playing Division III volleyball for Amherst College.

Danielle, who holds three school records in cross country and track, has led the varsity cross country for the last four years and will be running for Wesleyan University, also a Division III school.

Equestrians in battle

The equestrian team’s path to a third straight Interscholastic Equestrian League championship got a little tougher at the team’s Dec. 6 competition at Hansen Dam.

After a tough day that included two “involuntary dismounts,” the team finished in third place for the competition, out of a field of roughly seventy teams, and now it is in second place for the season, trailing Archer by seven points, 517 to 510. There are two more competitions in the season.

The day still included strong performances. As a team, Marlborough was the high point champion in the freshman division. Eliza ’15, who was the overall high point rider for the first competition, had another big day, finishing second overall. In individual sections, Alice ’13 took first in junior varsity jumper; Nicole ’11 took second in freshman dressage; Eliza took third in both freshman equitation and novice dressage, as well as fifth in freshman hunter; Olivia ’11 place fifth in junior varsity hunter; and Katelyn ’10 took sixth in freshman equitation.

JV makes shootout final

Marlborough hosted the annual JV Winter Basketball Shootout Classic tournament last week.

The Mustangs won their first game, defeating Saugus 37-28.  In the second game, the Mustangs lost to Mira Costa 41-33. They rebounded to beat Notre Dame Academy 38-37.  The Mustangs led by one point with 0.4 seconds left on the clock, when Kim Kellman ’12 stole the inbound ball to secure the win.  The win put the team in the championship game, where it lost  44-25 against a very tall Pasadena squad.

“Their play in the tournament makes this season look very promising for the JV squad as many players were able to get their “feet” wet on the court,” said assistant coach Naoto Tashiro.
