Meditation huts wait for quiet space

The two meditation huts from last year’s Artist in Residence Mineko Grimmer are currently in storage below the school in the parking garage.

Visual Arts Department Head Gina Woodruff said that she hopes to relocate them but the problem is finding a silent space on campus for the huts.

“The difficulty is locating a place that’s quiet and related to the environment,” Woodruff said.

Taken apart last year after the deconstruction of the modular village, the meditation huts’ new location will be considered after the school year, once all of the construction is finished.

AMP permits all grades to attend

The Arts and Music Production, AMP, event will occur second semester. It’s set to be held Jan. 29 in Caswell Hall and will be open to the entire school.

Last year, attendance was fairly high – around 400 people – but was open to only upper schoolers. Also, attendance was  dominated by high schoolers from other Los Angeles private schools.

All-school visual arts representative Erin ’10 said, “We felt if we are going to have such a large event, then we should include the whole school. It’s not fair to exclude the seventh and eighth graders.”

To foster a larger crowd, arts council had each band put together a video of their single. That video will be played in front of the entire school before the event.

Hannah performs in “The Nutracker”

Hannah ’12 performed in the Nutcracker with the Marat Daukayev School of Ballet in many roles, including the adult Clara.

The four shows were on the Dec. 12 and 13 at the downtown Aratani/Japan America Theatre.

“It was absolutely phenomenal,” said Hannah.  “It’s very nerve-wracking, but when you go on stage you don’t even think about it, and your muscles take over.”

Hannah usually dances for the company six days a week, and has been rehearsing around four times a week since September for the Nutcracker performance.

“The company is wonderful and really fun. We’ve all become best friends,” she said.

Her minor roles included a Sugar Plum fairy, a parent and an Arabian soldier.
