COLLEGE BOARD INTRODUCES EIGHTH GRADE PSAT

In 2010, eighth graders could be taking the College Board’s new PSAT if   the school decides to add the exam to its curriculum.
While supporters of the test argue that it will benefit students by exposing them to the format of the SAT at an earlier age, the test has also raised concerns as to whether eighth grade is too early to begin standardized testing.

If the focus of the test is on practice, then it’s a good idea and can be a confidence builder, said Robert Bryan, director of the middle school. “My concern is if the eighth graders were to draw too many conclusions from the results,” he said.

    With no parking on campus or on surrounding streets this year, students and faculty have had to plan longer travel times to school, as they now have to park at the Ebell Theater and shuttle to school.

    Clinton Oie, manager of auxiliary services, has been making ongoing changes to the shuttle system to reduce wait times.

    To deal with after-school congestion, Oie added a shuttle to the afternoon schedule and eliminated one from the morning run. He also reduced the number of stops to two from three - those who park at the second off-site lot, at Arden and 6th Street, now walk to campus or to Suite Violet.
    The Ebell lot is on the corner of Wilshire and Lucerne Blvd.

    Students call the wait time the most inconvenient aspect of the shuttle, but overall, the community has been adjusting well, Oie said.
