“LEAF” US ALONE: Workers hang a new foliage-patterned tarp on the fence (above) that surrounds the school’s construction site, soon after taggers vandalized the previous tarp. Workers quickly painted over the work first (above), then hung the new cover. Though the switch was planned for aesthetic purposes before the vandalism, school officials hope it will help discourage further graffiti.
Fences tagged with graffiti

The facilities staff covered the graffiti using matching green paint by noon.

Colin Powell to speak at graduation

As seniors prepared to leave their Friday class meeting on Jan. 18, Head of School Barbara Wagner made an announcement that had the class erupting in claps and gasps – the speaker for this year’s graduating class is Colin Powell.

“This is a really great opportunity to hear someone so powerful speak in such an intimate setting,” said Luisa.

There was no real process to get Powell to speak at graduation, said Helen (Candace ’08).  Powell is a family friend of the Helens and agreed to speak at graduation as a gift to Candace.

Powell has held many important government positions, his most recent being Secretary of State, for which he was appointed by George W. Bush and unanimously confirmed by the U.S. Senate.

He was also a professional soldier for 35 years.
