Chais wins photojournalism contest

The above photo, titled “Drummer,” won Maddy ’10 $50 in the UV’s first photojournalism contest of the year.

Maddy took the picture at a music festival on Aug. 30 while watching the band Japanther.

“My favorite photographs have a lot of energy and motion,” Maddy said.

She also said that she tries to take photos which have a deeper story behind them.

Maddy’s photo was chosen for its movement and emotion out of a field of eighteen submissions from nine students ranging from grades eight to twelve.

The content of the photographs ranged from a woman holding her child in Cambodia to a shot of Los Angeles freeways from above to a depiction of a family walking into the ocean.  Many student photographers took advantage of their summer trips and adventures and submitted photos that they took during them.

Submissions for the next photojournalism contest are due on Dec. 1 and should be e-mailed as an attachment to uvarticles@gmail.com.  The winning photo will be printed in black and white in the next issue of the UltraViolet, and the photographer will again receive a fifty dollar prize.

Criteria for judging submissions include the energy and emotional content of the shot, how well the photo succeeds in telling a story, and photo composition.
